If you want authentic and delicious Thai cuisine, look no further than Sabai Thai. Russell and Ning MacDonald certainly have it “Thai-ed up!”
The Harare Magazine team recently enjoyed (devoured!) a hearty meal while we chatted to the owners about their gem of a restaurant. Ning is originally from Thailand, but was living in South Africa when she and Russell met. Three years ago, they brought their culinary skills and ideas to Harare and found a peaceful and charming spot nestled among the Plant Plan Nursery in Rolf Valley. They converted horse stables to build their kitchen and dining space, and have expanded every year to accommodate their steady stream of customers with an appetite for delicious Thai cuisine.
Our waiter, Thomas, took excellent care of us with the top-quality service Sabai Thai has become known for. Ernest and I were torn as to what to order. My all-time favourite is Chicken Phad Thai, but I decided to change it up and started with the spicy Tom Yum Soup. It was a perfect way to warm up on a cold winter day. Ernest had the Coconut Prawn Soup and we both cleaned our bowls. For the main course, we couldn’t resist the wildly popular Crispy Duck. Russell told us that the Crispy Duck is their most-ordered dish, and it did not disappoint! We also ordered a Prawn Green Curry, which has a perfect balance of the Thai green curry flavours of coconut, lemongrass and chillies. With egg-fried rice and noodles to accompany our meals, we were totally satisfied.
All that spicy food made us very thirsty, so we ordered a tasty bottle of chilled Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc. The wine list at Sabai Thai is well rounded and reasonably priced. Ning has generously given us our Recipe of the Month so our readers can try their hand at Thai cooking at home. If you’re not up for that, head right on down to Sabai Thai and enjoy! Thank you to Russell and Ning for their gracious hospitality!
