The Revolution Will Not Be Texturized!: Kinky Curly Naturals Hair Salon

There has been a shift happening, and we’ve all seen it. Perceptions and norms are changing. The latest manifestation of this shift was seen on Doria Ragland, mother of the bride, arriving at the royal wedding sporting a glorious head of dreadlocks. An increasing number of women of African ancestry are wearing their hair in its natural state, and the kinky as well as the curly are being celebrated like never before. It is a movement, and we are here to provide encouragement, support and advice on how to care for our natural hair.

The kinky as well as the curly are being celebrated like never before

Kinky Curly Naturals was founded in March 2017 by owner Jenny Pedersen who moved back to Zimbabwe from Europe three years ago. She was excited to be back, assuming salons specializing in natural afro textures would be plentiful, but what she found was quite the opposite. Three stylists independently (strongly) suggested a chemical relaxer, claiming manageability, urging: “Imagine how long your hair would look with a relaxer”. This was a sad state of affairs, not just for her, but for all the naturalistas who were, no doubt, out there. She set out to create a haven for natural hair with a focus on hair health as well as natural plant-derived hair products and practices. She embarked on her natural hair certification and formed Kinky Curly Naturals.

The salon was originally located in one of the wings of her home. The response from the natural community was very positive, with many agreeing that a salon like this was a welcome addition to the market. Offerings at the salon include free hair consultations where current products and hair health can be discussed, as well as advice and tips shared on how to improve hair health and length retention. Kinky Curly Naturals employs stylists well versed in the moisture / protein balance for healthy hair growth. Another popular offering are the goddess faux locks built using human hair and human hair blend.

This year Jenny has found it necessary to move the salon to a more public setting, where clients can more easily access its services. As a result, the salon relocated on May 1st 2018 to Second Street extension inside the Golden Stairs plant nursery. In the new setting, a nail spa has been added to the salon offerings, as well as a hair colour specialist, with more services to be added in future.
