Island Hospice holds an annual event in October at Picabella Rose Nursery called “Rose Remembrance Day.” This special function is a fundraising event that celebrates the memory of loved ones lost. The roses at Picabella are absolutely stunning thanks to Sue and Gil Laver, the owners of the nursery.
A Brief History
“For Love of a Rose Day” was started in 1980 by the Raffingora branch of Island Hospice to give comfort to families who had lost children unexpectedly; it was a time to be peaceful and to reflect upon lost loved ones in a beautiful garden of roses.
During the late 1990s, the venue changed to a beautiful garden in the Darwendale area and Island Hospice changed the name to “For Love of a Garden.” They had speakers and a short prayerful service during which names of loved ones gone could be called out and remembered. Since 2013, the “Rose Remembrance Day” has been held at Picabella and has become a truly treasured tradition from Island Hospice and the fundraising committee.
Island Hospice’s mission is as follows: “Island Hospice and Healthcare, being a centre of excellence, provides quality palliative care services and support to those with life threatening illnesses and the bereaved through comprehensive direct care, capacity development, partnerships, research and advocacy.”
